Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Therapy
CPAP Therapy is the most widely used therapy for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Also known as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy, it’s designed to use a special CPAP mask and compressor pump to open up your airways while you sleep and keep them open so you have a peaceful, uninterrupted sleep every night.
Screening
Screening for Obstructive Sleep Apnea begins with a referral from your family doctor or specialist. You’ll then be asked to take a non-invasive overnight home test.
Consultation and Evaluation for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
After a review of your home test, you’ll receive a detailed consultation and CPAP mask fitting with a Registered Nurse or Respiratory Therapist. Once the mask is fitted properly, your CPAP therapy evaluation can begin.
A Registered Therapist will work with you during your evaluation period to ensure your CPAP mask and equipment is comfortable and in proper working order for the most effective results.
How does the CPAP machine work?
CPAP truly is the gold standard for treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Simply place it by your bedside at night. Once you’ve put on the CPAP mask, the CPAP machine will blow a stream of air through your nose and mouth. The air pressure is gentle and continuous, which allows the walls of your throat to remain open while you sleep.
If used on a regular basis, CPAP Therapy will improve your every day life by giving you a better nights rest that is free of snoring; gives you improved energy during the day; has the potential for weight loss; and decreases your chances of serious health risks such as stroke and Type 2 diabetes.
